I am happy to announce that partners in the South Atlantic Migratory Bird Initiative (SAMBI) Region had another great year securing funds and conserving bird habitat through the North American Wetlands Conservation Act and the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grants Program.  Approximately $15 million in grant funds were awarded to protect, restore, or enhance 61,000 acres. Seventy partners leveraged over $31 million to work on 42 separate project sites. The partners in this Initiative continue to deliver landscape scale conservation.

For those of new to this effort, the original partners, and to all of you, the grand totals for SAMBI accomplishments since 1999 are:

  • $106 Million in grant awards secured
  • approaching $1/2 Billion leveraged in match ($417 million)
  • over 1/2 Million acres conserved (561K acres)
  • 520 partners
  • approximately 290 separate parcels conserved

This effort is truly one of the greatest conservation success stories I have ever known about, and I am humbled to work with such great partners. Keep up the great work!
