You’ve probably heard a number of the recent assessments showing how the South and the Southern Coastal Plain are global diversity hotspots. There’s an interesting paper out in Nature Ecology and Evolution that looks more closely at global reptile richness. One of the more interesting patterns came out when they looked at global turtle species richness.

Sure, there’s certainly some problems with sampling bias in many of the tropical areas, but the fact that very few places in the world even come close to the number of turtle species we have here is very impressive.
