October 19th“Keeping track of the impacts of fire on open pine ecosystems in the South Atlantic LCC: An update on development of a common database for tracking fire and development of fire effects monitoring protocols in the South Atlantic LCC” with Rickie White, NatureServe

This webinar will provide an update on a South Atlantic LCC-funded project addressing the need to coordinate monitoring of fire impacts and improve tracking of the spatial extent of prescribed fire across the South Atlantic region.

A diversity of different public and private organizations support prescribed fire in the South Atlantic, many of which already have established protocols for monitoring fire effects. This project is coordinating with key partners to build off of existing NatureServe rapid assessment protocols to propose new integrated protocols for monitoring fire effects, with an emphasis on open pine ecosystems.

In addition, despite improvements by many organizations in tracking the spatial extent of prescribed fire, many prescribed fires in the South Atlantic are only depicted as a single point. Land management agencies often differ in the types of data and names of data fields for data collected, thereby making it more difficult to combine data into a single database. Integrated digitized polygons for the region, not just points and acreage by land manager, are critical for predicting ecological impacts over specific areas and understanding how each area interacts with other adjacent areas (that may or may not be under similar ownership). This project is working to understand how regional and local entities currently track fire and suggesting options for consolidating spatial extent information on prescribed fire throughout the South Atlantic LCC footprint (with a particular emphasis on open pine habitat) thereby increasing the number of prescribed fire treatments available as digitized polygons.
